Golf is a peaceful game surrounded by tranquil scenery. When played properly it can be an enduring game and a great way to relish a day with family or friends. In order to ensure all players' experiences are optimal, there are certain unwritten rules that regard health and safety and guarantee a pleasant experience.
1. Respect your fellow players and club members. This is extremely important so that the people you're playing with and other groups can all enjoy their game without feeling threatened or rushed. Loud shouting and high noise levels when other players are making a shot is extremely disrespectful and should be avoided. Also, be patient and wait for other groups to finish, no one should feel they have to rush their strokes.
2. Maintain a flow in your game. Keeping up a speed can prevent boredom and queuing in tee-off zones. Be sure to leave the tee immediately after your shot to allow the next person to go. Be sure to observe other players balls when in flight, this makes them easier to locate if the player is struggling to find them. If a player in your group has lost a golf ball, then allow the next group to make their shots before beginning a search for the ball, this prevents unnecessary waiting for other groups.
3. Be sure to respect the course. Respecting the course guarantees other players to enjoy their game just as much as you have. Playing golf on a damaged or littered course doesn't have the same pleasure as playing on a pristine course. Avoid causing damage through carelessness with your golf equipment and be sure to replace any divots in the fairways by pressing with your foot. Replace the flagstick with care to avoid any damage to the hole. Observe the course's cart rules to prevent any turf being damaged and rake the sand immediately after making a bunker shot.
4. Be prepared. Prior to playing, be sure to check any specific rules the golf course may have. If you are planning a trip with a large group then make sure you book in advance as many courses have a booking system in operation. Once a time is scheduled, be sure to arrive on time so other groups' games aren't affected and people in your group aren't waiting around.
5. Be aware of general game play rules. Be aware of others around you in regards to health and safety. When making a practice swing, check around that there is no one in range of being hit by your club. Before making a stroke, check that there are no players putting nearby who could be endangered by your shot. Should the ball look like it is going towards a player, yell "fore!" to alert the player to move to safety.
All golf courses have different rules in regards to safety and respecting the course. However, golf etiquette is a global concept which ensures all players enjoy safe play on a well maintained course.
